LUBBOCK, Texas, and AMARILLO, Texas — On Wednesday, The United Family launched a new donate-at-the-register campaign to raise funds for disaster relief across the panhandle following the devastating impacts of severe weather, flooding, and tornados. Running from July 5 to July 18, all proceeds raised will go to the Amarillo Area Foundation and the Community Foundation of West Texas. The United Family will also be matching the first $10,000 donated by guests.
Over a 48-hour period at the beginning of June, parts of the panhandle received a relentless downpour that produced as much as 4+ inches of rain over a short time period in certain areas causing significant flooding and damage. Team members at the Market Street location in Amarillo had a front-row seat to the devastation as the location was used as a staging area for first responders, rescue teams, and National Guard.
Just weeks later, two communities a couple of hundred miles away from each other experienced another round of devastation from Mother Nature. Perryton, Texas, and Matador, Texas, each saw EF-3 tornadoes leave a trail of destruction as multiple people lost their lives and dozens of others lost everything else. Again, team members in Perryton and our neighbors in Matador had a front-row seat as the communities reeled from the ruin.
“We are devasted when it comes to the destruction left by severe weather events across our communities and region,” said Sidney Hopper, president of The United Family. “As we worked to respond to these communities with aid and other assistance in the immediate aftermath of the storms, we are now looking to do something more. We hope this fundraiser will get assistance to those in our communities who need it most.”
The fundraising campaign will run in all United Supermarkets, Market Street, and Amigos locations from Lubbock to Amarillo. As with past donate-at-the-register campaigns, guests across the region can add any dollar amount to their grocery bill at checkout. If not prompted by a cashier, guests can always ask to make a donation.
